Indulge yourself during The Hangar’s majestic Cheese and Wine Night this March, promising a delicious evening in...
SoGlos jumped at the chance to indulge in a spot of brunch at The Hangar, a brand new Cotswold café located in Upper Rissington.
Friday morning tradition at SoGlos HQ is team takeaway coffees, so it seemed fitting to up our pre-weekend feeling a notch with brunch at The Hangar, a new Cotswold café and restaurant specialising in all-day breakfasts.
A visit to the independent eatery gave us the perfect excuse for a little road trip through the Cotswolds – heading along country lanes, passing through Bourton-on-the-Water, and providing ample opportunities to gaze at dream properties, before we arrived at our destination in Upper Rissington.
Located on a former airfield, The Hangar opened its doors at the end of 2016, with Donna Holland, who also runs Chester House Hotel and its restaurant The Croft in Bourton-on-the-Water, the driving force behind the new business.
Unlike many of the area’s cafés, The Hangar has a contemporary, almost industrial feel to it, which sets it apart from the more traditional tea rooms that can be found in Cotswold towns and villages, and definitely appeals to locals rather than just tourists.
Diners can expect a menu brimming with breakfast favourites – from scrambled egg and avocado bagels, to bacon and fried egg ciabattas which are served till 11am; while the mighty Hangar Breakfast, basically a bumper full English, is served all day.
We arrived just after 11am when the extended brunch menu kicks in, with Donna explaining that The Hangar’s chef, Jack Witcher, uses locally sourced produce where possible for its dishes and daily specials.
Whether you’re after a small snack or full-on feast, the menu has plenty to tempt, with the team ordering poached egg, avocado and smoked bacon on toast (The Hangar’s most popular dish); chorizo and sweet potato hash with spinach, roast tomato and poached egg; and a mozzarella, avocado, tomato and pesto club with fries.
One of the team is vegan and Donna was more than happy to accommodate with suggestions, including wild mushrooms with avocado and chilli on toast, which even tempted the meat eaters among us.
The dishes were all delicious and the portions were spot on – exactly what you want from a brunch, with the flat whites and seasonal juices providing the perfect accompaniment to our leisurely breakfast.
If you can’t make it for brunch, The Hangar also serves food on Friday and Saturdays evenings and has three-course menus that will tempt the post-work drink crowd who Donna said have become a mainstay since its alcohol license was granted.
The Hangar’s aim is to offer an inviting and relaxing place to eat, drink and meet and it seems to have achieved just that. The versatile space is perfect for private hire and Donna explained that it’s already been used to host everything from a christening to a lively 50th birthday bash, complete with disco balls and a live DJ set.
Brunch was just what we needed to power us through our Friday afternoon, and we all vowed that we’d be back to enjoy more of what the Cotswold venue has to offer.
