As the Bayeux Tapestry returns to Britain for the first time in nearly 1,000 years, Tewkesbury Abbey is hosting a special exhibition inviting visitors to step into its story.
Bringing one of history's greatest epics to life, 'From Conquest to Kingdom – The Bayeux Tapestry and Norman Heritage Trail' opens this October 2026, and features a full-scale printed reproduction of the Bayeux Tapestry housed within the striking setting of Tewkesbury Abbey.
Walking visitors through 88 years of history from 1066 to 1154, the exhibition shows the drastic transformation Britain underwent during and after the Norman Conquest.
Divided into two chapters, 'Conquest' explores the Battle of Hastings, William the Conqueror's victory, and the dawn of Norman Britain; while 'Kingdom' moves from the battlefield to the domestic realm, looking at how the conquest shaped everyday life in England, from its impact on our architecture, fashion and music, to faith and society.
The exhibition also features the stories of the remarkable individuals who helped to shape the new England, and Tewkesbury Abbey itself, including Queen Matilda, Robert Fitzhamon, and Robert FitzRoy.
As one of the country's finest surviving Norman buildings, Tewkesbury Abbey is so much more than just a venue for the exhibition, giving visitors a truly immersive experience as they step inside the world the conquest created. There's even a chance to climb the abbey's spectacular Romanesque tower, too.
The exhibition is part of nationwide programme, Bayeux Around Britain, organised by the British Museum and supported by WorldQuant, to demonstrate the significance of the Bayeux Tapestry in Britain's history.
The 70-metre masterpiece depicts William, Duke of Normandy's conquest of England in 1066, and showcases medieval life like nothing else, with 58 individual scenes, 626 characters, 202 horses, and images of civil and military architecture, and Viking seafaring.
'From Conquest to Kingdom – The Bayeux Tapestry and Norman Heritage Trail' opens to the public on Thursday 22 October 2026. The exhibition is free, with entry to the abbey by voluntary donation. Suggested donations are £5 per adult and £10 per family.
Exhibition and trail guides are available for a small additional cost from the welcome desk, while Norman Tower Tours cost £10 per person.
