As a town with a lot of history behind it, there's lots to uncover and learn across the great outdoors in Tewkesbury this summer.

Those looking for relaxing time outside can go birdwatching along the River Severn or take a stroll and absorb the intricate architecture of Tewkesbury Abbey, while others looking for an active afternoon can seek out the outdoor gym or try a cycle route.

We've partnered with Active Gloucestershire to round up 10 spots for outdoor activities that tailor to all kinds of adventures, both lively and the more mindful, across the summer months in Tewkesbury.

Try the outdoor gym at The Vineyards

Outdoor gyms offer a spacious and free alternative to indoor gym facilities. In Vineyards Park, you can find a range of resistance and calisthenics equipment to try among the cooling summer breeze.

Located not far from Tewkesbury Abbey and close to the rugby pitches, you'll find a range of fitness equipment accompanied by signs to guide safe use. Try pull ups and weight-training exercises, or try the cross trainer for a cardiovascular work out.

Join a gardening club and help Tewkesbury bloom

Getting outside doesn't always have to involve a full workout. Join a gardening club and meet new people as you help to maintain green spaces across Tewkesbury.

The Garden Club maintains the Pollinator Garden at Muster Park, the Nancy Kennedy Memorial Daylily Garden at the library, and many more outdoor spots.

The club has dedicated 56 years to maintaining green spaces across the town.

Go birdwatching at Severn Ham



Take a family-friendly stroll around Severn Ham and keep a look out for birds as you go. In the summer months, you might be able to spot redshank, lapwing and skylark bird species. 

Along the riverside you can also enjoy views of colourful narrow boats, idyllic buildings and historic Tudor architecture. Take a pause and snap a photo of the river reflecting nearby buildings across its surface, and head into the town centre after for a bite to eat.

Sketch and snap the architecture at Tewkesbury Abbey



Take a calming walk around the perimeter of Tewkesbury Abbey and marvel at its architecture. Founded in 1087 and consecrated in 1121, it has a unique silhouette with a Romanesque tower.

Take along a sketch book and draw the details of its exterior or take some detailed photographs. You can take a look inside the building with a tour, or even join a session of yoga on Saturday 1 August 2026 in the Abbey's Rose Garden outside. Tickets are priced at £15.

Follow the historic Battle Trail

For a dose of history and art in your day, follow the waymarked Battle Trail through the old battlefields where the Battle of Tewkesbury that took place on 4 May, way back in 1471.

Venture through key areas on this 45 minute-long trail, which guides walkers through key parts of the historic land. Learn about its story through information posts as you go, and see if you can spot two wooden oak horse sculptures that commemorate the battle.

For longer, detailed tours, the Tewkesbury Battlefield Society host regular guided tours. 

Take a mindful walk in Victoria Pleasure Gardens



With flowers in bloom and views of the millstream, try a quiet walk in Victoria Gardens for a moment of calm among a busy week.

With lots of green space, families can gather for a picnic or watch insects and wildlife hard at work across the summer months. 

Go bug hunting in Tewkesbury Nature Reserve



There's lots to see and do in Tewkesbury Nature Reserve for all the family this summer. Spot wildlife among wildflowers, listen out for birdsong or take a blanket and enjoy a family picnic. 

For families seeking a new wildlife challenge to try, there are a number of events taking place inside the nature reserve this summer, offering children a chance to learn about all kinds of wildlife and see them up close, including a free bug hunt and free river rangers events.

Try a looped cycle route around the town

There are lots of pathways and roads to cycle along throughout Tewkesbury and its borders. Have a go at one of the popular looped routes for a ride with plenty of changing scenery that takes you directly back to your start point.

For a route suitable for all skill levels with a starting point that can be accessed via public transport, try the Coffee House loop from Ashchurch.

Start at Ashchurch train station and follow the 442 Cycle Network route. You can make stops at The Old Post Office coffee shop and Kemerton Coffee House before heading back to the station.

Along the route, cyclists can also take in views of the River Severn and Overbury Church. 

Go on an evening bat walk

Lighter summer nights bring more summer fun for all ages, including new ways to spot unusual wildlife that aren't able to be spotted during the day.

Bats can be seen around numerous locations within Tewkesbury. Head out at dusk to spot them around Tewkesbury Abbey or join a guided bat walk within the Nature Reserve for free.

Kayak, canoe or paddleboard on the River Avon



Have a go at kayaking, paddleboarding or canoeing on the River Avon. If you're experienced on the water, then you can head out at the popular launch spot of the The Fleet Inn at Twyning. 

For those that prefer company, try inclusive junior rowing at the AB Severn Rowing Club or build your skills and confidence with water sports tuition at Croft Farm Water Park – a private lake near the Avon where you can windsurf, sail, kayak and more.
