A new permanent structure covering the outdoor terrace at Cheltenham's No. 131 will be in place by the autumn, with works getting underway this July 2026.
It means the hotel and dining venue's controversial white marquees are finally coming down, more than two years after owner Julian Dunkerton lost an appeal to keep them.
The new terrace will feature a white-painted metal pergola with a retractable roof, designed to compliment Cheltenham's Regency architecture while providing guests with a 'high quality' year-round hospitality space.
Julian Dunkerton said: 'We are excited to begin work on this significant investment in No. 131 and Cheltenham.
'The new terrace will create an exceptional space for guests while enhancing the appearance of the Promenade and supporting the town’s thriving hospitality and tourism economy.'
The restaurant's terrace first came under scrutiny in 2023, when Cheltenham Borough Council ordered the venue to take down 'temporary' tents that were put up to accommodate diners during the Covid-19 pandemic, due to their perceived visual impact on the Grade II-listed buildings they obscured in Cheltenham's Central Conservation Area.
Some were subsequently removed, but the biggest marquees have remained in place until this month.
The venue applied for planning permission for a permanent structure in 2024, submitting two design options, with the metal pergola plan being approved in February 2025. More than 2,000 people had signed a petition in favour of the plans.
A No. 131 spokesperson said the new light touch structure will provide an 'elegant and contemporary' addition to the venue, offering visitors a premium experience throughout the year and further strengthening Cheltenham’s reputation as one of the UK’s leading leisure and hospitality destinations.
They also noted the development represents the latest investment by Julian Dunkerton and Jade Holland Cooper, who have collectively 'invested heavily' into Cheltenham through a range of hospitality, retail and commercial ventures.
'Their investments have helped create jobs, attract visitors and support local businesses, contributing significantly to the town’s continued growth and prosperity', they added.
No. 131's hotel will remain open throughout the renovation period, with the Terrace Restaurant continuing to welcome guests while the initial phase of work takes place in front of the neighbouring building.
