The Ancient Ram Inn in Wotton-Under-Edge has been voted the most haunted destination in the UK.

The Ancient Ram Inn in Wotton-under-Edge is the most haunted destination in the UK, according to new research carried out by a holiday company.

With a total ‘scare score’ or 83 out of 100, the Gloucestershire pub’s scary credentials have been mentioned in 61 per cent of its TripAdvisor reviews, and is cited in 22 (now 23!) articles for being a creepy place to crash.

The Ancient Ram Inn is linked to a number of ghostly tales of paranormal activity – one of the most popular being that of a witch burned at the stake in the 1500s – with rumour claiming that she haunts the room where she slept the night before she was captured and killed.

The historic Wotton-under-Edge pub is also featured in SoGlos’s 20 of the most haunted places in Gloucestershire.

Other Gloucestershire properties to make the shortlist are Woodchester Mansion, with a scare score of 37 out of 100, and St Briavels Castle near Lydney which scored 33 out of 100.

The research was conducted ahead of Halloween 2019 by Authentic Vacations, a holiday company specialising in tailor-made breaks in the UK.

And, while The Ancient Ram no longer trades as a bed and breakfast, those looking for a fright can arrange to tour the venue on a paranomal event.
