Artisan bakery and coffee shop chain, Gail's, could soon be opening its first Gloucestershire location, with plans submitted for alterations to a Cheltenham town centre shop.
The popular chain, which originated in London in 2005 and has grown to having more than 180 UK bakeries as of the end of last year, has applied for permission to make changes to the former Russell & Bromley shop on Cheltenham Promenade.
Known for its fresh, handmade bread, pastries and cakes and house blend speciality coffee, a Cheltenham bakery would be the first Gloucestershire location for Gail's, which opened its first south west sites in Bristol, Bath and Salisbury in 2024 and 2025.
Cheltenham's Russell & Bromley store closed earlier this year, after the national retailer entered administration.
Gail's Ltd has asked Cheltenham Borough Council for permission to make internal and external alterations to 100 Promenade, with minor internal works to the ground, first and second floors and the installation of new advertisements.
Ground floor internal works involve a new shop fit, including a customer serving area and seating, with a kitchen to the rear.
Outside works include a fascia sign featuring Gail's branding and the repainting of the shop front.
London consultancy Planning Potential said, on behalf of the applicant, that the proposals seek to 'work with the character' of the building and represent an overall minor degree of alteration, 'given the site’s long standing association with commercial uses'.
