From teenagers struggling with acne to adults living with rosacea or pigmentation, problem skin can affect confidence just as much as appearance. Yet many people spend months – or even years – trying different products before seeking professional advice.
Drawing on years of experience treating thousands of clients at Gloucester's multi-award-winning clinic, ProSkin Clinic & Health UK, Karina Thomas shares the questions she's asked most often – and the advice she wishes more people knew before reaching for another skincare product.
What are the most common skin concerns you see from clients across Gloucestershire?
Without question, the three concerns we see most are acne, rosacea, and pigmentation. But people rarely come to us simply wanting clearer skin – they want their confidence back.
Many clients tell us they avoid photographs, won't leave the house without makeup, or feel self-conscious in certain lighting. Skin conditions often have a much bigger emotional impact than people realise.
One of the biggest lessons I've learnt is that no two people are the same. Two clients may have acne that looks almost identical, but the cause can be completely different.
That's why we don't rush to recommend products. We want to understand what's happening beneath the surface. Treating skin without understanding the cause is a little like painting over damp – it may look better temporarily, but the underlying problem remains.
What's the biggest mistake people make before they come to you?
The biggest mistake isn't buying the wrong product – it's believing the next product will be the one that finally fixes everything.
By the time many people visit us, they've spent hundreds or even thousands of pounds on skincare that promised amazing results but wasn't right for their skin.
Meanwhile, inflammation can continue, pigmentation may become more established and, in some cases, permanent scarring can develop.
We also see people constantly changing routines or layering multiple active ingredients because they think more products will produce faster results. In reality, skin responds far better to consistency, expert guidance, and a treatment plan that's designed specifically for them.
Are social media skincare trends doing more harm than good?
Social media has encouraged more people to wear SPF, take care of their skin, and talk openly about concerns they may once have hidden.
The downside is the pressure it creates to achieve 'perfect' skin.
Every day we're shown flawless complexions, dramatic before-and-after transformations and products claiming to work overnight. What we don't always see are filters, editing, clever lighting, or the months of treatment behind those results.
There's nothing wrong with wanting healthier skin, but copying somebody else's routine isn't the answer. Your skin is unique, and the best results come from understanding its individual needs rather than following the latest trend.
What's the one thing people with problem skin often overlook?
People are often surprised by the questions we ask before we've even looked at their skincare routine.
We're interested in stress, hormones, sleep, diet, and general health because your skin is your body's largest organ, and it's often one of the first places your body tells you something isn't quite right.
Professional skincare and advanced treatments can achieve incredible results, but lasting improvements usually come from looking at the bigger picture rather than focusing on products alone.
Sometimes the biggest breakthrough isn't finding another serum – it's understanding what's causing your skin to behave the way it is.
When should someone seek professional skincare advice?
Much sooner than most people do.
Many people keep telling themselves they'll try one more product or give it another month. Before they know it, months have become years.
The longer certain skin conditions are left untreated, the greater the risk of ongoing inflammation, pigmentation, or scarring. Just as importantly, many people lose confidence while they wait.
If your skin isn't improving, the problem keeps returning, or is starting to affect your everyday life, don't keep hoping it'll eventually resolve itself. Speaking to a qualified professional sooner can often save time, money, and unnecessary frustration.
If you could give people across Gloucestershire one piece of advice, what would it be?
Don't lose hope. One of the saddest things we hear is: 'I've accepted this is just how my skin is.'
The reality is that skin is incredibly resilient. With the right advice, the right treatments, and a personalised approach, remarkable improvements are often possible.
I've seen clients who once wouldn't leave the house without heavy makeup return months later feeling confident enough to go bare-faced. Those moments never stop being rewarding.
For me, treating skin has never just been about improving someone's complexion. It's about helping people feel like themselves again.
