Cheltenham Town FC has appointed an experienced football commercial and business manager as its new managing director.
Amidst of an 'ongoing period of expansion', the EFL League Two club began recruiting for an 'equally ambitious' managing director to play a key role in the next stage of its growth in April 2026.
Described as the 'standout candidate' for the role, the club has this week announced the appointment of James Watts, who is currently chief commercial officer at League Two rival Swindon Town.
The club says James brings a wealth of experience in football, having also held senior roles at Newport County and Hereford FC.
In his new role, he will oversee the club’s day-to-day operations, support revenue growth and help shape its longer-term development.
Currently working a notice period at Swindon, James will start at the EV Charger Points Stadium in mid-June.
Mike Garlick said of the appointment: 'We conducted a thorough recruitment process and James was the standout candidate.
'Not only does he bring a comprehensive understanding of all the commercial aspects of the game but also excellent communication, man management skills and experience.
'I’m confident he will be a valuable asset to Cheltenham Town Football Club and I look forward to working closely with him in order to drive the club forward.'
James said: 'I am delighted to be joining Cheltenham Town Football Club. This is a club on the up and it is an exciting time to be joining.
'There is huge potential here and a strong sense of community, I can’t wait to get started and look forward to working with the fans, board of directors, staff, partners and sponsors to help drive this club forward'.
