Popeyes has applied for planning permission on the former Taco Bell on Cheltenham High Street.

Cheltenham's recently closed Taco Bell could soon be home to a new Popeyes Louisiana chicken shop.

PLK Chicken UK – the official corporate entity for Popeyes – has submitted a planning application to Cheltenham Borough Council to 'enable occupation of the site'.

The planning application seeks permission to display building signage to reflect Popeyes branding, including a new fascia sign and 'window manifestations' at the venue on Cheltenham High Street.

Famous for its Louisiana-style fried chicken, served classic or spicy, Popeyes offers sandwiches, tenders, wings, boneless pieces, and wraps, as well as shakes, drinks, box meals and a kids menu – and is a part of Restaurant Brands International, which also owns Burger King and Tim Hortons.

If planning permission is granted for the Cheltenham venue, the new restaurant would be Popeyes' second in the county, after its first opened in Gloucester in July 2024.

It would also be the second American-style fried chicken shop on this stretch of Cheltenham High Street, less than two minutes' from Wingstop at The Brewery Quarter, which opened in July 2025.

A consultation on the application is due to take place on Wednesday 28 October 2026.
