Lilian Faithfull Care is celebrating its 75 year anniversary

Gloucestershire-based charity, Lilian Faithfull Care, is celebrating 75 years of caring for the county’s elderly people, this May 2021.

It was established in May 1946 by its namesake, Lilian Faithfull, after she retired from her position as Principal of Cheltenham Ladies’ College. She vowed to do something about people suffering during old age, setting up The Cheltenham Old People’s Housing Society.

The society acquired several buildings, including Astell House and St Faith’s from Cheltenham Ladies’ College, turning them into residential homes for the elderly. Just seven years after founding the charity, Lilian Faithfull passed away at Faithfull House in Cheltenham – and the charity was renamed in her honour.

Lilian Faithfull Care is now a thriving operation with five care homes and two day care hubs set within characterful period buildings and a purpose-built home, providing residential, nursing, dementia and palliative care to elderly people across Gloucestershire.

It employs 412 staff with over 2,253 years of experience between them, as well as a commitment to improving the lives of elderly people and providing a ‘home for life’ for every resident – where nobody will ever be asked to leave due to financial reasons.

Much like its founder, many Lilian Faithfull Care residents have fascinating stories, which the charity recognises and shares through it’s ‘Remarkable Lives’ project.

It continues to do pioneering work and has adapted to the changing needs of the care sector too, especially during the pandemic – such as taking part in a pilot scheme to introduce companion robots to its homes, to help residents make video calls to family and friends.

To mark the anniversary, Lilian Faithfull Care has created a virtual ’75 Miles in May’ challenge, asking people to walk 75 miles during the month of May to fundraise for the charity.
