Gloucestershire golf business doubles in size and creates jobs

Gloucestershire-headquartered golf trolley manufacturer, Stewart Golf, has released details of ‘a stunning 2020 during which the business almost doubled in size’. With new jobs created and a factory expansion planned too…

Jobs have been created at Stewart Golf as sales increased by 93 per cent last year, according to the Gloucester-based manufacturer.

As golfers began to head back to the fairways post lockdown – both in the UK and abroad – the firm began to see what it described as ‘an unprecedented surge in demand for trolleys’.

It was a demand that saw the firm build 65 per cent more of its X Series electric trolleys than in 2019 (including its flagship trolley X9 Follow) and increase production of its R1-S Push by 51 per cent.

It was also about product development, with Stewart Golf launching its new Q Follow model to critical acclaim after four years of design and development.

The momentum it expected to continue and will also see the firm add an extra 10,000 square feet to its factory space in February 2021.

Mark Stewart, chief executive officer of the business, said: ‘Clearly we’re thrilled with our 2020 performance.

‘It’s been a crazy year in so many ways and we consider ourselves very fortunate that our business has been able to blossom during the pandemic when so many have suffered.

‘The team have been nothing short of spectacular. Doubling in size would be a tall order in any year, but to do it with such significant obstacles in the way is exceptional.

‘The international appeal of our machines has been demonstrated by our rising levels of export. Stewart Golf is truly a global brand and we’re excited about what the future holds for the business.’

The firm builds its machines by hand at its Quedgeley factory and has had to double its staff numbers to cope.

While UK sales grew by 33 per cent, exports soared and now account for almost 75 per cent of sales – with Stewart Golf products sold in 45 countries including the USA, Canada, South Africa, Singapore, and South Korea.

European sales also increased by 16 per cent despite Brexit uncertainty throughout the year.
