Tewkesbury Abbey is celebrating a big birthday this year, as the Gloucestershire attraction marks 900 years of consecration on Saturday 23 October 2021.

Although the Abbey was originally founded in 1087, construction of the present building didn’t start until 1102 – with the epic project nearing completion when Tewkesbury Abbey was consecrated in 1121.

The milestone will be marked with the culmination of Tewkebsury Abbey’s 20.21 campaign, which was launched five years ago to raise £5 million to keep the iconic building thriving for generations to come.

There were plenty of events planned for this year and while many unfortunately curtailed by the Coronavirus pandemic, there’s still then opportunity to celebrate as the Abbey hosts its three-course anniversary dinner on Wednesday 15 September 2021.

There’s also the spectacular Festival of Light to look forward to in November 2021.

And this year has been momentous for Tewkesbury as a whole, with the town also celebrating 550 years since the Battle of Tewkesbury in 1471.
