Gloucester Cathedral is inviting everyone to celebrate Christmas together in 2021

After spending last Christmas apart, Gloucester Cathedral is inviting people in the county to come together and celebrate, with a host of festive events from carol concerts to family services this December 2021.

This Christmas, Gloucester Cathedral invites people from across Gloucestershire to come together and celebrate the festive season at its events throughout December 2021.

Welcoming people from all walks of life to enjoy carols from the Cathedral Choir, festive music, beautiful decorations and light displays, as well as traditional and family services, there’s so much going on this festive season.

Brand-new for Christmas 2021, Gloucester Cathedral is putting up its biggest ever Christmas tree outside on Cathedral Green on Saturday 27 November 2021.

Starting on Wednesday 1 December 2021, Gloucester Cathedral’s hugely popular Digital Advent Calendar returns, with a poem a day from Gloucestershire Poet Laureate, Ziggy Dicks, being read by a member of the cathedral community.

From Saturday 11 December 2021, the cathedral will be decorated with lights, Christmas trees and garlands, as well as a Christmas Story Trail for little ones to follow and its famous Knitivity in the Quire.

Carols on the Hour also takes place on Saturday 11 December 2021 with performances from the Cathedral’s choirs on the hour, every hour from 11am until 4pm.

Visitors have the opportunity to see the cathedral all lit up after dark with special ticketed evening openings events on Saturday 11, Friday 17, Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 December 2021.

And, for the main events, Gloucester Cathedral’s Carol Services take place on Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 December 2021 while its Family Crib Services are on Thursday 23 and Friday 24 December 2021. Tickets to attend these services in person are currently sold out, but anyone wishing to watch can tune into the live stream of the Carol Service on Wednesday 22 December 2021 and the Family Crib Service on Thursday 23 December 2021.

Dean of Gloucester, Stephen Lake, said: ‘Last year, it was said, that Christmas was cancelled. Like so many, many others, we were separated as a family just at the time we would always be together.

‘This Christmas, despite on-going concerns, we are back with as much joy as we can muster – so ‘O come all ye faithful!’ Of course, Christmas does not need to be saved as it saves us, with the good news of God here among us in the birth of Jesus Christ.’
