A new photography project which will capture portraits of inspiring women in Gloucester is being launched to mark International Women’s Day in 2022.

Showing off the ‘indomitable, pioneering spirit’ of Gloucester’s women, the project – which is being run by the Museum of Gloucester and local charity Hundred Heroines – will see female photographers capture portraits of 100 inspiring women, from frontline workers to artists, poets and dignitaries.

The portraits will then be featured in a special exhibition at the Museum of Gloucester in December 2022.

Some of the women featured include South African-British poet and filmmaker Thembe Mvula and two of SoGlos’s 50 inspirational women in Gloucestershire, the Rt Reverend Bishop Rachel Treweek – the Church of England’s first female diocesan bishop; and Carol Francis – the first Black woman to be elected to Gloucester City Council and the first Black sheriff and deputy mayor of Gloucester City.

As part of the project, JOLT Gloucester will be hosting workshops to encourage more women to take up photography, while Gloucester Guildhall is hosting a live performance from Thembe Mvula, as well as a screening of Ali & Ava by the BAFTA-nominated Clio Barnard on International Women’s Day, this Tuesday 8 March 2022.

Hundred Heroines, which is the UK’s only charity dedicated to celebrating women in photography, is encouraging people to nominate their own local heroines by sharing an image of them on social media with #100GlosHeroines.

Mayor of Gloucester, Councillor Collette Finnegan, said: ‘It’s incredibly important to mark
International Women’s Day remembering the contributions that women from throughout
Gloucester make to life in the city.

‘This is a fantastic project that will help to share and collect these powerful stories that represent and empower our communities.’

Hundred Heroines founder, Del Barrett, added: ‘We are incredibly excited to be partnering
with the Museum of Gloucester to bring together such inspirational women. We hope these portraits of local heroines will emphasise the importance of empowering women 365 days a year – not just on International Women’s Day.’
