A spacious Co-op store will be the highlight of a new retail centre at a housing development in Twigworth.

Work has started on the development which will be anchored by the 4,000 sq ft Midcounties Co-Op convenience store, as well as hosting retail, dining and leisure outlets in five other units.

Family-owned Gloucestershire building contractors EG Carter & Co Ltd has started work on the retail centre.

Thomas Jones, associate director, said: ‘We are excited to have started construction on this new industrial unit – it will be a great asset for local businesses.

‘We are planning to be complete and hand over the project to Robert Hitchins at the end of September 2021 and we’re looking forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on the community.’

The Twigworth development, on the A38 between Gloucester and Tewkesbury, will include 725 homes by national housebuilder Vistry and a primary school.

Michael Plimmer, senior development manager for Gloucestershire-headquartered Robert Hitchins Ltd, which is developing the retail centre, said: ‘The local centre will offer much-needed, high-quality and conveniently-located retail and leisure facilities for local residents.’

Commercial property agents Arc Retail is marketing the units which are available to rent for uses including shops, cafes, pharmacies and hot food takeaway.
