The Screening Rooms has closed its doors as of Monday 21 January 2019 to allow major renovation works to get started on the building next door – the former sports bar, Après.

Cineworld was given planning permission in 2018 to expand into the former bar, but plans for the new look cinema have not yet been revealed, although it’s expected that the branding will follow Cineworld’s ‘ViP experience’, which is currently operating in a number of its cinemas around the UK.

The ‘ViP experience’ includes a private lounge with a gourmet buffet which guests can enjoy before the movie starts. Unlimited soft drinks are included in the price, with alcoholic drinks available to purchase and take into the film.

ViP will also offer guests luxurious reclining leather seats and individual tables. Some ViP experiences even offer seating inside a glass box with privately controlled sound with between 12 and 20 seats which are separate to the rest of the screen.

Being described as a ‘luxury upgrade’ all three screens of the The Screening Rooms will close, while the 11 screens including the IMAX screen in the Cineworld building, will remain open.

Demelsa Coleman is marketing manager for The Brewery Quarter, and said: ‘We’re delighted Cineworld is investing in this upgrade for visitors. We’re looking forward to revealing the fantastic refurbished new look later this year.’

A spokesman for Cineworld said: ‘We aim to offer customers a great cinema experience and upgrading these screens will do just that. Cineworld is proud to offer some of the best innovation in cinema technology to date and we’re happy that we will soon be able to offer greater choice to our Cineworld Cheltenham customers.’
