My Beautiful Laundrette, an adaption of Hanif Kureishi’s ground-breaking and Oscar-winning film, is coming to Cheltenham in October.

Hanif Kureishi’s 1985 Oscar-nominated film My Beautiful Laundrette will be taking to the stage at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham, from Tuesday 8 to Saturday 12 October 2019.

The culture clash comedy, blends humour with social realism, against a setting of Thatcherite London.

Co-produced by Leicester Curve, Belgrade Theatre in Coventry and the Leeds Playhouse, My Beautiful Laundrette tells the story of British Pakistani Omar, who renovates his uncle’s neglected laundrette into a flourishing business against a backdrop of racial tension.

After being challenged by a fascist gang, Omar finds Johnny, an old friend from school. As they work together to transform the laundrette, their relationship also transforms romantically.

This bold new production of Kureshi’s cult film explores cultural tension, gender equality, class and generational conflict, all with a lively backdrop of 80s music and culture.
