1. Get a personal trainer

Ask for expert advice from a qualified personal trainer. Helping you to create a sustainable exercise and overall fitness plan, personal training is also great to get you motivated and keep the momentum up too.

2. Enter a race

Give yourself something to work towards and sign up for a race, fun run, or even a triathlon if you’re feeling up to it. With plenty of time to train, having an event ahead of you will help you to remain focused and you’ll feel great once you cross the finish line.

3. Consider joining a gym

Sign up to a gym that suits you. Whether you’re into swimming, fancy giving Pilates a go, or perhaps you’re keen on karate, joining a gym is great way to commit to your fitness plan and meet others in the same boat too.

4. Look at your nutrition

A huge part of being healthy stems what from what you eat. Look into food plans that support the type of exercise you will be doing. Whilst it’s definitely important to choose a diet that’s sustainable and suits your lifestyle, consider planning meals ahead to avoid indulging in too many tempting treats.

5. Get a gym buddy

Heading to the gym alone can be a bit daunting and it’s also much easier to skip a session if you’re exercising on your own. Team up with an exercise buddy and hit the gym together, which allows for a catch up too – always a bonus!

6. Be realistic with your goals

Avoid obsessing over Instagram images of fitness models and celebrities; instead speak to a personal trainer about what you want to achieve and they will help you to outline goals that are realistic and personal to you.

7. Mix it up

Sticking to the same exercise can be really tedious and it’s easy to lose motivation too. Inject some fun into your workout and try out something new. With everything from yoga and Pilates to boxing and spin classes, there’s bound to be something that takes your fancy.

8. Get the gear

Whilst it’s great to keep fit and healthy, having the right gear is sometimes equally as important. Start with your shoes and consider getting your gait analysed in a running shop, this will help you find shoes to support your knees, hips and other joints.

9. Keep hydrated

Keep your body fuelled with plenty of water and avoid mistaking dehydration for hunger. Coconut water and watermelon juice are also a great shout if you’re after a tasty alternative.

10. Try weights

Many first-time gym-goers focus a great deal on hitting the treadmill hard for hours on end, but using weights is a great way to build muscle definition, sculpt your body and it also helps speed up your metabolism too!

11. Try a fitness class

If the thought of working out alone is too daunting, why not sign up for a fitness class where you won’t be on your own? What’s more, with a motivated instructor, some great music and friendly faces, you’ll be working out with no worries in no time at all.
