Bus operator Stagecoach West is making public transport more accessible for visually and hearing-impaired people in Cheltenham, thanks to new audio-visual announcements on its buses.

Cheltenham town centre routes will now have audio-visual technology to announce the next stop on screens and via audio, on board its 14 new state-of-the-art buses.

It’s the first time the technology has been used on buses in Gloucestershire after Stagecoach West worked with Gloucestershire Sight Loss Council to make sure the new announcements worked for people who are blind or partially sighted.

Managing Director of Stagecoach West, Rupert Cox, said: ‘We want to ensure that every customer can travel with us and do so with confidence. The introduction of the 14 new buses to our Cheltenham network marks the next stage of innovation at Stagecoach West and our continued commitment to serving our community.

‘We hope that the new audio-visual announcements will make our buses more accessible than ever and offer vital peace-of-mind to those who need it most.’

Engagement Manager for Gloucestershire Sight Loss Council, Alun Davies, said: ‘We have been delighted to work with Stagecoach West and our blind and partially sighted members have highly valued the opportunity to provide feedback on the new audio-visual announcements.

‘The Gloucestershire Sight Loss Council members are passionate about collaborating with local service providers and decision makers to make meaningful change. Our work with Stagecoach West is a shining example of what can be achieved.’

Cheltenham’s new buses will also have modern new interiors with USB charging points next to every seat, along with low emission engines and start-stop technology.
