Providing an evening of beautiful classical music, the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra performs at Cheltenham Town Hall on Thursday 16 June 2022.
Conductor Marios Papadopoulos leads proceedings with Tamsin Waley-Cohen on violin, as the orchestra performs Mendelssohn’s Overture, The Hebrides, Op. 26, Bruch’s Violin Concerto No.1 in G minor, Op. 26 and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 in D, Op. 36.
The sweeping Mendelssohn piece captures the dark and brooding spirit of Fingal’s Cave on the Scottish island of Staffa, which inspired him; Beethoven’s Viennese roots shine through in the final piece of what’s known as his ‘early’ period; while Bruch’s most famous work centres around a yearning E flat adagio.
As well as the performance, there is also a pre-concert talk taking place at 6.30pm which is free to attend for ticketholders.
